The Field Observation Essay is an assignment the requires me to select an online community (social media page, website, hashtag feed, discussion forum, blog, message board, etc.) and observe the people in this community by analyzing their behavior, demeanor and interaction/ reactions with one another. This essay will be assessing trends and patterns in the online community while contrasting perspectives through a secondary source. This assignment is a non-participant observation. What this means is that unlike the Transcultural Interview I won’t be involved or interacting with other, this essay is solely based on observing a community from an outsider perspective and recording people interactions/lifestyles. However this essay will include a commentary section that explains my experience observing this community.

Observation Field Notes

This is a written transcription of note I have taken over the account of a week highlighting information that seems impactful towards my observations. Specific details such as time, date, language, beliefs, behaviors, interactions and demographics are written down. This transcription will serve almost as an outline focusing on the information with scenarios and experiences that have relevancy being presented in my final essay.

Field Observation Essay

For the final part of my assignment I will write a 4-5 page (1000 – 1250 word) essay using my observation field notes and outside sources to describe, analyze, and draw conclusions about my online community. This essay will focus on the relationship between this community and society whilst mainly comparing different experiences to create overall unity within a group. After my observation there is a commentary section that explains my process of observing this community and my understanding of it as a whole.
